Making a new friend

Posted on August 30, 2008 @ 01:42AM

I was having coffee at the Nax with Derf and Kam, when Derf mentioned he was going to visit Miro. Miro had just been through a chilling experience with a cult, and through Derf, I’d heard a lot about her. She was interested in Botany apparently, and was even compiling a book. I was very interested in meeting her, so I asked Derf if I could come along.

We went to the hospital where Miro had been staying to recover from her ordeal while the Tosadae Detective Branch had been doing a follow-up investigation.

Miro’s eyes seemed to light up as Derf entered the room.
“Hey Miro,” he said. “This is my friend Nkiru. She’s very interested in meeting you.”
She looked up at me meekly, Derf had told me that she was quite shy.
“Hello.” she said.
“Hi Miro,” I tried to say warmly (I was still new at being friendly, but I was determined to reach out to this girl.) I hear you’re quite the botanist.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m especially interested in the pre-quakes flora.”
“Wow,” I said. “I’d love to talk you about that some time. Me and a few friends have this project where we’re trying to recreate old recipes using today’s ingredients, we’d love for you to join us.”
She seemed to brighten up considerably. I hadn’t expected this reaction.
“Really?” she asked. “I actually love cooking!”
“You do?” I asked, pleased.
“You do?” Derf repeated, confused.
“Oh yeah Derf,” she said. “I would have organised a dinner if I wasn’t rudely interrupted by the Hall of Shadows.”

Derf and I looked at her, somewhat shocked. She looked down sheepishly.
“That, umm. That was supposed to be a joke.” she said.
Derf and I laughed nervously, but relieved. We weren’t sure how to approach what she’d just been through. We stayed around talking for ages, I learned a few things I didn’t know about good plant-foods from Miro. Apparently she knew a man who was into exotic foods back at her home of Station City. Derf left after a while and I stayed to talk to her.

I think her and I will get on well.
